Grades K-2 - State Landsat Mosaic Puzzle
http://www.earthobservationday.com/docs/EOD_Lesson_Plan_K-2.pdf This lesson features a state’s basic geography and introduces young children to satellite images. In particular, it introduces the Landsat Statewide Mosaic, a composite image of each state created from several Landsat images shown in natural color as would be seen by a person traveling on the satellite. The objective is to introduce students to satellite images and show them their state’s natural and man-made features. These might include mountain ranges, grasslands, agricultural areas, urban areas, deserts, and forests, depending on the state of interest. Teachers will identify a few of the most obvious features and talk about them in the context of basic geography (where they are with respect to other features, their size, and their basic ecology). |

Grades K-16-Interactive Introduction to Remote Sensing Imagery focusing on Land Cover Change Detection
http://www.earthobservationday.com/docs/EOD_Lesson_Plan_K-16.pdf The interactive introduction is an on-line memory puzzle that students can use to strengthen their skills in identifying patterns and features on the Earth’s surface. Students ‘turn over’ images and try to recall where the matching image is located in the puzzle. Additional information on each image is located by clicking on the image. The objective is to complete the puzzle in the fastest time. The middle school and high school lesson teaches students how landscape changes occur over time and the impact of the changes on the biosphere, including humans, animals, and plants. Students use an online memory matching game showing satellite imagery over two different time periods to explore landscape changes at various locations around the globe. |

Grades 6-8 - A Google Earth Introduction to Remote Sensing
http://www.earthobservationday.com/docs/EOD_Lesson_Plan_1_middle_2011.pdf This lesson teaches middle and high school students how to use Google Earth to explore the area around their house, and how to view topography. Students create a Placemark at their house and describe their town’s topography. This lesson should be completed before starting the next exercise (Understanding Land Use and Land Cover Using Google Earth). |

Grades 6-8 - Understanding Land Use and Land Cover Using Google Earth
http://www.earthobservationday.com/docs/EOD_Lesson_Plan_2_middle_2011.pdf This lesson teaches middle and high school students how to use Google Earth to create a simple land use map of the area around their school. Students learn the difference between land use and land cover, the difference between natural and man-made features, and basic mapping features such as polygon creation. |

Grades 6-12 – On-Line GIS Lesson for Earth Observation Day ‘Introduction to Land Use and Land Cover
http://www.earthobservationday.com/docs/EOD_Lesson_Plan_ArcGIS.pdf This lesson teaches middle and high school students how to use an on-line GIS to explore local land cover change. The GIS includes some of the National Land Cover Data, including land cover, impervious surfaces, and tree canopy. Students explore the various maps, identify areas that have certain land cover characteristics, and look for areas that where land cover change has occurred. |

Grades 6-12 - An Introduction to Map Scale Using Google Earth
http://www.earthobservationday.com/docs/Scale_EOD_final.pdf This exercise introduces students to the concept of map scale using Google Earth. It can also be used to support some of the questions that students a likely to ask as they work through other lessons. |

Land Cover Change Teacher's Guide - Land Cover Change Discussion
http://www.earthobservationday.com/docs/Land Use and Land Cover Teacher's Guide.pdf This document will guide teachers through some of the questions that they can use to support the On-Line GIS lesson and the Google Earth lessons. It essentially guides the teachers through the outdoor activity and provides a series of questions that they can ask to reinforce the lessons that explore land cover in the other exercises. |
