Landsat 5

On March 1, 1984, Landsat 5 was launched into space from Vandenberg Air Force Base (California). Still observing the Earth after 25 years, Landsat 5 greatly exceeded its expected three year life span. As the U.S. Geological Survey has remarked, "the Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor aboard Landsat 5 has captured images of Earth’s changing surface and has amassed a legacy of Earth observation unmatched by any other satellite of its kind."
